The first week of work on the Start House proved to be quite full with trying to get most of the framing done. I have already learned a lot of new things about framing and general knowledge about using nails and putting the wood together. I learned how to make a base of a building stronger so that it can withstand more wear and tear. I was amazed at how we were able to finish all the framing that we could before moving it up to its final location at Blackwater.
There was a lot of planning that went into this project beforehand. We had to plan out how we would build it so that we knew what materials would be needed. Then we would be able to figure out an estimate cost so that we could raise funds to obtain all the lumber and supplies we needed. We started out by going done to RP Johnson’s and meeting with Mr. Johnson who helped us get all the materials we needed at a discounted price, which was extremely nice of him. We had met with Jason Nelson who is a contractor a week or so prior to the start of the project and he helped show us how to start building the all the separate parts. This helped us greatly when day one came around we were able to get our materials and start building right away instead of wasting time contemplating how to start building the structure. We faced some challenges through the week with weather that limited us some days but we were able to still get the work done that we needed to. We were able to assemble two of the walls, the base and cover the base with decking.
The completion of most of the framing puts us in a perfect spot for next week after we were able to move the parts up to the top of Blackwater on Saturday. To my surprise we did not run into any major problems like wrong measurements or a shortage on materials. Up to this point it this has been a very fun and exciting experience and I hope that it continues to be in this upcoming week.
